100 MAIN STREET FINE ART
Catherine Raynes
 |
| CATHERINE RAYNES Born in Scituate, Massachusetts, June 14, 1966. Being the daughter of a world-renowned naval architect and living in a seaside community, much of Catherine’s inspiration is shaped by the environment she was raised in. Her father bestowed a passion for his craft and from an early age an indelible impression on Catherine’s own artistic passions was made. Much of her childhood was spent creating art and experiencing the landscapes that surrounded her—whether it was wondering the beaches near home, basking in the rich hues
of a Nantucket summer sunset, or quietly drawing her feet through Damariscotta Lake in Maine.
Catherine graduated cum laude with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. During this time she had the distinct honor of studying abroad at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brugge, Belgium. Her time there was formative as she traveled extensively absorbing the magnificent art and history of eastern Europe. However, it was her immersion in the Dutch art culture and the dramatic light and composition of works by Rembrandt and Vermeer that most influenced her. Like these masters Catherine strives to
apply these same sensitivities in her subjects.
Catherine continued painting beyond her career as an art director and began showing her work in the late 1990s. She has had numerous joint and solo exhibitions. Today Catherine travels New England with her peers. Following in the footsteps of such notable artists as Childe Hassam, Benjamin Champney, and Willard Metcalf she paints on location to capture the beauty and mystery that has drawn artists to these destinations for decades. Her works from the Isles of Shoals, the White Mountains and the Cornish Art Colony are published in three books—Visions in Granite: Two Hundred Years of Painting in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Island Light—Isles of Shoals and Summer Colonies—The Cornish and Dublin Art Colonies. In conjunction with the Isles of Shoals exhibition she was one of two guest speakers featured
on PBS’s Windows to The Wild. Her art is also currently on display at the New Hampshire
State House.
